Yoga and Arthritis

Arthritis, or inflammation of the joints, refers to a number of diseases that produce deterioration in various joint structures, which causes pain and immobilisation.

Severe arthritis often results in loss of function and deformity.

As we all know, we tend to react to pain by minimising movement.  However, we also now know that one of the worst things for someone with arthritis is inactivity.  Instead regular, gentle movement helps reduce pain and maintain mobility.

Doctors are discovering that an appropriate yoga-based exercise programme expands range of movement without stressing or straining the joints.

Additionally, movement promotes health in many systems of the body. For example, many of the yoga postures help to promote healthy circulation which in turn reduces swelling and increases delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the joint tissues to help with the healing process.
